The VDNH Ice Rink Reaches Record Levels of Attendance

On the night of December 31 about 10,000 people gathered here to ring in the New Year. And on Monday, January 2, 16,195 visitors laced up to enjoy the ice. VDNH therefore recommends planning your visit to the rink in advance: there is the most free space on the ice, at the box offices and in the locker rooms during morning sessions and after 8:30 p.m. It is during these hours that visitors can find the shortest queues at the box offices and rental pavilions.

During the morning session (10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.) 4,237 people visited the rink, and during the evening session (5:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.) a total of 11,958 guests skated here. In total, 6,721 pairs of skates were rented, while the remaining visitors came with their own skates. The peak attendance hours at the rink were from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Starting on January 2 and continuing on for the duration of the holiday season, animators in extravagant designer outfits create an infectious atmosphere of fun on the rink. Crazy outfits with coats of incredible cuts, fantastic headdresses, and fancy wigs and accessories all form a kind of living art and a unique sight for the rink at VDNH. They take pictures with visitors and put together a wide variety of mini-competitions, funny games and competitions around themselves, including the "selfie-battle", "the best catwalk strut", "hugs", and others.

Icy dance floor

In 2017 Russia's main ice rink also holds weekly games, dance lessons and skating drills. Every Friday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. the rink transforms into an icy dance floor, where a team of professional trainers offers dance lessons on the ice. This is a great opportunity to learn different styles and movements.

On January 13, there will be a lesson on the European style. On January 20 the rink will transform into a school for Eastern dances, and on January 27 visitors will learn to two-step on the ice, along with other techniques favoured among Texas cowboys.

Skating drills and morning warm-up

Weekend mornings at the rink will also start with skating drills. Professional trainers and a whole regiment of exhilarating exercises await visitors right on the ice. During the workout, fitness drills to warm up all of a person's muscle groups will alternate with dance movements to rhythmic music. Skating drills will be held every Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and every Sunday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Right after the morning warm-up, active games will commence at the rink, where anyone can join in at any time. Relay races, "stand still", thread the needle, fun competitions and humorous contests are all great opportunities to spend time on the ice in a fun and active way! To participate, all visitors need to do is get a bright band from any of the animators, who are also right there. Larger games will be held every Saturday from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.

Funny friends at the children’s rink

Members of the "Funny Friends" crew will also be on the ice at the same time for the youngest guests of VDNH at the children's skating rink. Brightly costumed characters from the most beloved cartoons will play games with the youngest guests to help them make their first steps on the ice, and also entertain them with fun contests, conga lines, and other games and entertainment.

With these cartoon characters children not only learn how to skate, but can also take pictures and chat with them. The "Funny Friends" entertainment programme will be held every Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m.
