Circle of Light festival 2016

The sixth Circle of Light Moscow international festival will be held on 23-27 September. The festival will feature light shows at seven sites, with the Moscow State University skyscraper joining the festival for the first time.

The projected image on its façade will cover an area of 25,000 sq m. It will beat the record of last year’s image on Defence Ministry buildings, which earned a spot with Guinness World Records.

“The light show projected on the Moscow State University building will be devoted to its creation, construction, and little known facts from its history,” said the press service of the Moscow Department of National Policy, Interregional Relations and Tourism. “There will also be a show about how important it is to maintain harmony in nature, about the force of its elements, and the creative role of humankind.”

Apart from the Moscow State University building, Circle of Light shows will be performed at VDNKh, the Bolshoi Theatre, Manezh Square, Grebnoi Canal and the Izvestia Hall concert venue. The light shows on the Bolshoi Theatre, Manezh building and the Central VDNKh pavilion will be devoted to the Russian film-making industry and the current Year of the Cinema. The images of film characters from Soviet and Russian movies will be projected on the façade of the Bolshoi Theatre. Light and laser installations about scientific discoveries crucial to the film-making industry will be shown on the Manezh building. The Turetsky Choir art group will perform songs from Russian and Soviet films at VDNKh. They will be accompanied with light projections and images on the Central Pavilion building, which harmoniously reflect the musical theme and the songs’ lyrics.

The Art Vision VJ contest will take place at Izvestia Hall, with 20 teams from various countries competing in the art of mixing light and laser images to different songs. Also, light artists and light installations creators will hold training lectures in the Digital October centre on 24-25September.

The key venue for last year’s Circle of Light programme was the Defence Ministry building on the river. The projected image covered an area of 19,000 sq m and was included in the Guinness World Records as the largest projected video image. It was a light show consisting of six novels: “There is a profession…,” “The Russian Geographical Society,” “The Light Classics,” “Constellations,” “Light Discoveries,” and “The City of Light Phenomena.”
