Arkhip Kuindzhi’s exhibition at Tretyakov Gallery

An exhibition of works by Arkhip Kuindzhi has commenced at the State Tretyakov Gallery. Kuindzhi is one of the brightest Russian painters of the 19th century. The collection of his works was last displayed in 1992. Back then, the exhibition mostly included finished paintings.

This time visitors will be able to see much more. The halls of the Engineering Building will be the place to visit to take a look at over 180 specially selected paintings and sketches. In addition to works from the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum, the exhibition will include works from 19 of the largest regional collections, a private collection and from museums in Azerbaijan and Belarus.

The exhibition will offer a new vision into Kuindzhi’s art. The innovative painter uses the colours his contemporaries believed to be too daring. This was continued by his apprentices: Nicholas Roerich, Arkady Rylov, Konstantin Bogayevsky, Ferdynand Ruszczyc and Nikolai Krymov.

Arkhip Kuindzhi created a special type of romantic landscape based on the realistic vision of the world but processed by the artist’s creative individuality. His art unites classical landscape painting with Russian and European Romanticism, achievements of the Barbizon painters, the impressionists’ discoveries and the decorative staging of easel paintings.

Tickets are available at the State Tretyakov Gallery’s ticket offices and website.
