World’s largest Christmas bauble being assembled on Poklonnaya Hill

The Christmas tree bauble that is 17 metres high and 11 metres in diameter will be big enough for several dozens of people if they feel like dancing in it to the sound of songs about Moscow and the New Year.

On 29 November, the world’s biggest musical Christmas bauble complete with a dance floor is being assembled on Poklonnaya Hill. The decorative giant will be 17 metres high and 11 metres in diameter. Inside there will be speakers which will play songs about Moscow and the New Year. It is the second time that such a thing has been put on Poklonnaya Hill. Last year it was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest LED sculpture.

“The bauble will be assembled in several stages. The lower part of the metal structure will be assembled first. It will hold the upper part by metal wires. Then the bauble will be covered with 23,000 lamps. The entire structure will weigh several tonnes,” said Moscow Deputy Mayor for Housing and Utilities Pyotr Biryukov.

The Christmas tree bauble will be hollow inside in order to accommodate a dance floor which will be big enough for several dozen of people. The bauble will have two oval-shaped entrances. People will be able to dance to famous New Year tunes, among them Happy New Year by ABBA, Winter from Antonio Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, the song Moscow Windows by the band Moskovskiye Devchata, Winter performed by Eduard Khil and others.

The patterns on the bauble will change colours - red, green and blue - and go from snowflakes to firework displays with different rhythms depending on the volume and sound of the music. The detailed programme of light installations has not been developed yet. Some of the images might be dedicated to the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Poklonnaya Hill will also see ice copies of international landmarks; they will be installed there as part of the Ice Moscow: In the Family Circle annual festival. The festival will be devoted to the culture and traditions of the countries participating in the World Cup. People will see an ice Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame de Paris (France), Big Ben (Great Britain) and the famous statue Christ the Redeemer from Brazil.
