There are many meaningful monuments in Moscow. This monument entitled "Compassion" was installed at Mendeleevskaya metro station. As it is engraved on the pedestal, "the monument is dedicated to the human treatment of stray animals" and has a sad history. In 2001, at this place, a 22-year-old woman Yulia Romanova, with a great cruelty, killed a mongrel stray dog with a kitchen knife. The dog had lived at the Mendeleevskaya station for several years before and was called Malchik ("little boy" in Russian).
The woman was arrested and underwent one year of psychiatric treatment. The incident sparked a wave of public outrage regarding the treatment of animals, and, in 2007, a monument was installed in Malchik's honour in the hall of the station.
