In 2007 when the first book released by Arthur Conan Doyle "A Study in Scarlet" celebrated its 120th anniversary in Moscow was installed a monument to the famous heroes of English literature - Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. The monument appeared in Smolenskaya Embankment not far from the building of the British Embassy. As far as is known it is the only sculpture composition in the world depicting the legendary detectives in tandem.
The author of the sculpture – Andrew Orlov modeled the characters guided by Sidney Paget's original illustrations for the first edition of the book and the well known cinema characters from the famous Igor Maslennikov’s film about Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson with Vasily Livanov and Vitaly Solomin playing the leading roles.
The series of the films directed by Igor Maslennikov have won the recognition all over the world and what is more valuable in the Great Britain itself. In 2006 Queen Elizabeth II awarded the title of Member of the Order of the British Empire to Vasily Livanov for his brilliant portrayal of Holmes.
