Hotel Metropol is notable not only for its interesting history and famous guests, such as Elton John, Michael Jackson, Catherine Deneuve, Annie Girardot, Sharon Stone, Bernard Shaw, Marlene Dietrich and others, but for its unusual architecture and design. The hotel was built in 1899-1905 in Art Nouveau style under the direction of the famous Russian merchant Savva Mamontov, who was a real connoisseur of art and a patron of many great Russian artists, such as V. Serov, I. Repin, V. Vasnetsov, M. Vrubel, V. Polenov, K. Korovin and others. So S. Mamontov invited not only the best Russian architects, but artists to develop the design of the hotel. The elements created by the artists are especially interesting. V. Vasnetsov and K. Korovin worked on the interior design of the building. The mosaic panel "Princess of Dreams" by Mikhail Vrubel keeps the central place of the main hotel facade. You can see the original painting in the State Tretyakov Gallery.
