Brattsevo estate was first mentioned during the times of Ivan the Terrible. The territory was in turn owned by Zubovs, Khitrovo, Naryshkins, Stroganovs, Rimsky-Korsakovs. Particularly, a mother-in-law of one of the owners Mr. Kologrivov was very famous for her flight on a balloon. In the 18th century such an action was considered a true heroism. In 1780 alderman Stroganov built a huge estate Brattsevo, which survived to this day. Stroganovs' wealth was so tremendous that there is still a saying in Russia “You can’t be richer than Stroganovs!”
According to a legend, Brattsevo estate was projected by illegitimately-born son of Stroganov, a serf Andrey Voronikhin. However, there isn’t any firm confirmation for that. Andrey Voronikhin was a famous architect, an apprentice of Kazakov and Bazhenov and the author of Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg.
Several famous Russian movies were shot in Brattsevo estate.
In the neighborhood, on the other side of the estate, there is a unique nature sanctuary, so called “Skhodnenskaya chasha” or “bowl”. A meteorite had hit the Earth there in ancient times. The village Brattsevo itself was destroyed in 1980, and a big children’s hospital was built instead. Princess of Wales Diana visited that hospital in summer 1995. A famous ophthalmologist Fedorov had crashed in a helicopter there in 2000.
