Moscow Maslenitsa festival to include over 1,000 workshops

Visitors will learn how to paint window surrounds, bake gingerbread with frosting, grind flour and make a Slavic ten-handed doll and carnival costumes.

The Moscow Maslenitsa Festival will be held between 17 and 26 February and include an ambitious educational programme. In addition to traditional Maslenitsa fun, 13 venues in Moscow’s centre will host over 1,000 free workshops and open classes – cooking, applied and creative.

Neo-Russian style

The neo-Russian style will be represented at a venue on Klimentovsky Pereulok. The main projects will include designing carved window surrounds – both vintage and modern, based on old designs. An animation chalet will host workshops on drawing and painting window surrounds, decorating gingerbread with frosting and flour grinding.

Painting Dymkovo toys and environmental workshops

Visitors will be able to learn the traditions of the Russian applied arts on Tverskoi Boulevard. The Pottery Studio near the monument to poet Sergei Yesenin will host workshops on painting Dymkovo toys and building fairy tale towns.

The Dollhouse at the monument to Kliment Timiryazev will offer workshops on making a Slavic ten-handed doll and a spring doll on weekdays and environmental workshops on weekends. Visitors will be able to create florariums, a little garden in a flat bowl or a figure – the symbol of Maslenitsa from eco-friendly materials (fabric, straw, threads and bark).

Folk musical instruments, embroidery and needlework

The animation chalet Svetlitsa, an area between Manezh Square and Revolution Square, will host children’s workshops on the traditions of Maslenitsa celebrations, playing folk instruments, embroidery and other crafts, including twisting belts and braids, utensil painting and creating traditional Maslenitsa figures. The studio on Revolution Square will offer workshops on poker-work, making clay whistles and masquerade masks.

School of carnival costumes and children’s theater studio

Attendees will also be able to prepare for Maslenitsa celebrations at the Book Market fair on Novy Arbat Street. The adult library will host a school of carnival costumes, where artists, props and costume designers will teach visitors to create costumes for the Maslenitsa carnival. In addition, there will be workshops on creating accessories, embroidery and decoration. The children’s library will offer workshops on illustration, collage and Maslenitsa decoration. Also, a children’s theater studio will be available there during the festival days.

Moscow Seasons

This year, the Moscow Maslenitsa Festival will open with the Moscow Seasons street festivities. Traditional Maslenitsa fairs will open at 13 venues in the city’s centre. Visitors will enjoy public festivities, sporting events, historical re-enactments, street performances, workshops and many pancakes.
